A Hard Lesson

Grace learned a hard lesson yesterday - if you love something, don't leave it unattended. She wore her prized Jazz jersey to school yesterday. Apparently she got hot at recess and decided to take it off. We have been talking a lot about being responsible, keeping track of your stuff, etc, so in an effort to be responsible she carefully folded it and laid it on the sidewalk where her class lines up after recess. When she came back it was gone.

I'm almost sure someone swiped it. We searched the school high and low yesterday afternoon, asked the teacher, asked the office and nothing. Bless her little heart, Grace was very upset, but she didn't cry. I'm very proud of how she is handling it actually. She did keep saying "I was trying to be careful. I put it somewhere where I would know where it was." She can't quite undersstand why someone would just take it.

Her biggest worry is that we have Jazz tickets this year and she and Chad are going to a game. She asked for a jersey for her birthday so she would have it to wear on her game date with Dad. Now she's worried she'll have to go the game without it.

So we made a plan - she is going to check lost and found everyday for at least a week. We are praying hard that it will turn up. If it doesn't turn up in a week then we'll figure something else out. I'm hoping someone will have an attack of conscience or their mom will say "where on earth did you get that??" and make them bring it back.

It wasn't carelessness, I think she really was trying to keep track of it. She just never imagined that someone would walk off with it. If it doesn't turn up, we will of course buy her a new one, but for now it is a good lesson. Responsiblity has many layers and if you love it, keep it with you.
