Family Home Evening

Ah, Family Home Evening. It's challenging. Mostly because people cry, poke each other and go off looking for their night nights and never come back (not naming any names, Brynn).

We decided to make 2009 the year we really consistently start having Family Home Evening, in years past we go in spurts sometimes really good, sometimes, let's just say we fall a bit short. A few months ago Chad and I made a list of things we specifically want to teach Grace before her baptism this summer and we have started working through the list. For the last few weeks we have been studying the fourth article of faith. We are covering it in 4 lessons - we've had a lesson on faith (2 actually, because the kids had so much to talk about), a lesson on repentance and tonight we talked about baptism.

It was a pretty simple lesson. We sang when Jesus Christ was baptized. Then I used two pictures from the gospel art kit (#208 John the Baptist Baptizing Jesus Christ and #601 Baptism). We read about Jesus' baptism in Matthew. Grace, Chad and I took turns each reading one scripture and I was pretty impressed with how well Grace can sound out big scripture words like cometh and straightway.

Then looking at the two pictures, we talked about the fact that Jesus was baptized and we get baptized just like Jesus did, so we can be like him. Explained a bit about immersion and had a good giggle about what happens if your toe comes out of the water. I laid the two pictures on the floor and had Brynn (who had been rolling around crying for the better part of the lesson) point out what was the same in each picture. Simple things like, there are two people, they are both in the water, etc. That seemed to reel her back in.

When I asked Brynn tell me again who is in the picture. She pointed to the picture and said "that one is Jesus and that one is John the Baptism."

Close enough. We are building an eternal family, one 10 minute, squirmy, whining, momentarily spiritual lesson at a time and we've got a life time to fine tune the details. (Thank goodness, because I think it might take that long.)

I am horrible at Family Home Evenings....well, mostly finding a time to get my hubby away from work to do them. I really wanted to be better this year. It is worth it....crazy as it is. Thanks for the re-motivation.
