Chinese Individualism?

We watched the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing last night. It was pretty amazing. There was one part however, which I found especially entertaining a la Matt Lauer. In his defense, I'm sure he didn't write the script, but he delivered it.

There was one part of the program where there were several thousand people on the floor of the stadium. They were all dressed in matching neon green suits, lit up with hundreds of lights and they ran around creating various geometric patterns.

It was a very impressive looking, but then Matt Lauer started talking about how this portion of the program was symbolic of the rise of Chinese individualism. Breaking free from the dark colors of Communism and becoming free to follow their individual pursuits.

Hmmm...yes, Matt, because nothing screams individualism like a couple of thousand people dressed exactly alike running together in the same direction!

Actually, I totally thought of you when I saw those suits. Imagine running around in the woods behind mom and dad's house in that bad boy. UFO sightings on the news - mass hysteria. The smiles didn't bother me. They were freaky, no doubt, but somehow it worked...
