5 was fun until Brynn found out about the kindergarten shots.

Brynn made her annual visit to the pediatrician.

5 year old stats:

Weight 40 lbs, 4 oz
Height 46 3/4 inches!!!

That means she has inched up a tad in the weight percentile, but they are still marking her height in the margin above the chart. They've been doing that for a few years now. She is literally taller than the chart, so they have draw the yearly dot up in the top margin. It's quite funny actually, that parade of dots dancing along the margin of her official medical history.

She's the picture of preschool health, but alas that did not prevent her from the dreaded kindergarten shots. 4 in all, should have been three but apparently we missed on in there somewhere. The doc apologized for the oversight, said it was entirely their fault. His apology mattered not a whit to poor Brynn, who was by this point beside herself with fear.

After convincing the nurse to give her the shots in the legs instead of the arms (not meat on them arms - ouch), I sat Brynn on my lap and wrapped my arms tight around her. Moments later syringes were flying. The nurse was fast. It was over before it began, but Brynn still lost her tiny mind at the horror of it all.

I actually think she would have been ok, but the first shot caused a bit of blood and then the nurse caught it with her glove and smeared the blood up Brynn's leg. Not like she was hemorrhaging or anything, but you would have thought so from the screaming.

Took us 10 minutes after is was over to calm down and stop crying. Brynn barely blinked at her complimentary book and sticker and she made me carry her to the car, convinced her legs were broken.

For three days after the incident, Brynn commented on her fear and loathing of all shots, her worry about her "shot holes," her concern over her near broken legs and an adamant refusal to attend first grade.

After much fine mothering, I'm happy to report that the shot holes are gone, the blood has stopped flowing, she's running around wild again and I've assuaged her fears about 1st grade. She's agreed to go, now that she knows there are no requisite shots.

Isn't it amazing how those shots can completely handicap a child?! The downside is that now they finally got them but they aren't going to kindergarten yet. Will was not too impressed with that. Poor girl with her "shot holes".

Oh that is hilarious! So I was a nurse for a pediatrician for about 6 years in college and I will never forget this little 5 year old girl beebopping in saying, "I'm not afraid of shots, I'm 5 now, I'm not scared at all!" Well she took pride in that until the end of her exam when I came in with the "shots" and got her all ready and she started screaming and said, "THOSE AREN'T SHOTS, THOSE ARE NEEDLES!!!" ....someone forgot to explain to their child exactly what a "shot" was! Cute Brynn!!!!
